Folic acid, a derivative of pteridine, was first isolated from the liver and later found to be so abundant in the green leaves of plants that it got its name. It is widely available in meat, fresh fruit, vegetables, yellow crystalline powder, tasteless and odorless, its sodium salt soluble in water, insoluble in alcohol and ether and other organic solvents, insoluble in cold water but slightly soluble in hot water. Unstable in acidic solutions and easily destroyed by light.
Also known as "vitamin Bc" and "Vitamin M". One of the B vitamins. Yellowish or orange-yellow flake or acicular crystal, odorless and tasteless, heated to about 250ºC, gradually darker, finally into a black jelly. Antianaemic drug, tea content up to 50 ~ 70μg/100g, can promote normal erythrocyte formation. It is involved in the transport of methyl group in tea plant metabolism. Also participates in the synthesis of amino acids and nucleic acids in the body, and promotes the production of red blood cells together with vitamin B12. For all kinds of megaloblastic anemia, especially for pregnant women and infants megaloblastic anemia.

Animal applications
(1) Application of folic acid in pigs
The results showed that supplementation of folic acid 2.5mg/kg significantly increased the daily gain, serum protein concentration, liver DNA, RNA and protein contents, and serum urea nitrogen concentration was significantly decreased. It was also found that higher supplemental levels of folic acid decreased the growth performance of piglets.
Some scholars have found that folic acid supplementation has no significant effect on reproductive performance of first-born sows, but significantly increases the serum folic acid content of first-born sows and newborn piglets. Folic acid, as an important cofactor of carbon unit metabolism, can reduce plasma homocysteine content and improve lipid peroxidation. Proteomic analysis showed that folic acid had significant effects on the expression and activity of antioxidant enzymes in rat liver. [6]
(2) The application of folic acid in dairy cattle
There are few studies on folic acid in ruminants, and it is generally believed that rumen microorganisms of ruminants can synthesize folic acid and make good use of it. However, Girard et al. believe that folic acid is in great demand in gestational stage of lactating cattle and should still be added from the diet. In the tissue metabolism of high-yielding dairy cows, folic acid and choline can provide a carbon group for energy and protein metabolism, purine and DNA synthesis, so as to improve the production performance of dairy cows.
(3) Application of folic acid in chicken breeding
Some scholars added 1.64, 2.14 and 2.64mg/kg folic acid to the diet of broilers. The results showed that the supplemental level of 1.64mg/kg folic acid significantly increased feed intake, average daily gain, serum fructosamine content and 2.64mg/kg water significantly increased serum uric acid content of broilers. Folic acid supplementation significantly increased the serum protein content of broilers at 21 days of age, and 3.0mg/kg supplementation significantly increased the feed intake and average daily gain of broilers, and significantly reduced the ratio of feed to gain. It was found that folic acid combined with niacin significantly increased the average daily gain of broilers. Other studies showed that the combination of niacin and folic acid can significantly reduce the abdominal fat weight and abdominal fat percentage of broilers, significantly increase the breast muscle weight, leg muscle weight and leg muscle percentage, and significantly increase the thymus index, spleen index and bursa of Fabricius index of broilers, to a certain extent, increase the serum immunoglobulin content and significantly reduce the serum cholesterol content. The apparent digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, organic matter and nitrogen free extract was improved.
Medical application
Existing studies have reported that folic acid plays an important role in human health. Folic acid deficiency can lead to neurological abnormalities in newborns, thrombotic occlusive heart and cerebrovascular diseases, anorexia and anorexia nervosa, megaloblastic anemia, vascular dementia in the elderly, depression and other diseases.
(1) The effect of folic acid on neural tube malformation in neonates
A study of folic acid supplementation in diet and nutritional supplements in the United States from 2003 to 2006 suggests that folic acid intake among women of childbearing age should be improved. In areas with high NTDs, the daily dose of folic acid provided to pregnant women is only 100μg, far below the daily requirement.
A study of the effects of dietary folic acid intake on blood folic acid levels in lactating women in Canada concluded that the amount of folic acid that lactating women should consume daily is 400μg. Folic acid plays an important role in regulating neurogenesis and programmed cell death.
In the United States, fortification of folic acid in foods led to a 19 percent decrease in the number of babies born with neural closure defects, although other factors played a role in the decrease.
0.4 mg of folic acid is used to prevent neural tube malformations in the fetus. The Syan Folic acid Project has proved that 0.4 mg of folic acid taken by expectant mothers during pregnancy can reduce the rate of neural tube malformations in the fetus by 85%, which has been widely used in more than 50 countries around the world. 5 mg folic acid is used to treat female anemia, consumers must carefully look at the instructions when choosing to buy, according to different circumstances to choose.
(2) Studies on the effects of folic acid on other human diseases
In addition to its effectiveness in preventing incomplete nerve closure in infants, folic acid also plays a role in the prevention of some common human diseases.
(3) The effect of folic acid on other diseases
The increase of homocysteine concentration in plasma can lead to thrombotic occlusive heart and cerebrovascular diseases, anorexia and anorexia nervosa, senile vascular dementia, depression and other diseases. Folic acid is an important cofactor in the cyclic metabolism of homocysteine. Folic acid can be converted into 5, 10-methylene tetrahydrofolic acid through activation, which provides methyl for the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. Folic acid deficiency leads to the accumulation of large amounts of homocysteine and its release into the extracellular system resulting in increased plasma homocysteine concentration, leading to disease. Studies have shown that the consumption of folic acid fortification foods is intrinsically related to the increase of serum folic acid level in middle-aged and elderly people. Folic acid may reduce the risk of gout in people who have no history of the disease. Folic acid deficiency is associated with damage to many systems in the body, including colitis and chronic atrophic gastritis in the digestive system, and an increased risk of colon and stomach cancer. Folic acid supplements inhibit the recurrence rate of colorectal cancer.
Studies have shown that a certain concentration of folic acid can inhibit the growth of ovarian cancer cells by affecting folic acid metabolism. Folic acid may enhance the cytotoxic effect of chemotherapy drugs on ovarian cancer, thus enhancing the sensitivity of ovarian cancer to chemotherapy.
