Cysteamine is white crystalline powder with special smell.   Density (g/mL,25/4ºC) : 0.75;   Melting point (ºC) : 66~70; Soluble in ethanol.   Cysteamine is easily destroyed by oxidation in air because of the sulfhydryl group in the molecule.It is usually used as a hydrochloride.   Chemical synthesis method of cysteamine: It is prepared by reaction of ethanolamine with hydrogen bromide and cyclic hydrolysis of carbon disulfide. It can also be synthesized from cycloethylamine and hydrogen sulfide.

Application & Function

Cysteamine is a stable aminothiol and can be used to prevent and treat radiation sickness syndrome caused by X-ray or other radiation (manifested as nausea, vomiting, general fatigue, smell and taste disorders, etc.). It reduces ionizing radiation-induced death and chromosomal damage in mice in a dose-dependent manner. Cysteamine binds rapidly and temporarily to plasma proteins upon administration and this activity is directly correlated to its radioprotective effects.In vitro, 0.1 mM cysteamine depletes 90% of free cystine from cystinotic fibroblasts. Formulations containing cysteamine have been used to treat nephropathic cystinosis and reduce glomerular deterioration in humans.
