Alpha lipoic acid (ALA), also known as Lipoic acid (LA), α-lipoic acid and thioctic acid is an organosulfur compound derived from octanoic acid. ALA is made in animals normally, and is essential for aerobic metabolism. It is also manufactured and is available as a dietary supplement in some countries where it is marketed as a free radical scavenger and assists in repairing oxidative damage and regenerates endogenous antioxidants , including vitamins C and E and glutathione. This agent also promotes glutathione synthesis. In addition, alpha-lipoic acid exerts metal chelating capacities and functions as a cofactor in various mitochondrial enzyme complexes involved in the acid decay.
