Cefuroxime sodium is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. The antibacterial activity against Gram-positive cocci is similar or slightly worse than the first-generation cephalosporin, but the β-lactamase produced by Staphylococcus and Gram-negative bacilli is quite stable. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus, Enterococcus and Listeria are resistant, and other positive cocci (including anaerobic bacteria) are sensitive to this product. The antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus is worse than that of cefazolin.
