Dipyridamole, a coronary artery dilator and antithrombotic drug, is used mainly for ischemic heart disease and stroke, but to a lesser extent for other conditions. Its side effects may include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other adverse reactions. Combined with heparin, it may cause bleeding tendency, occasional rash, and coronary artery blood theft.Early years used to be the treatment of coronary heart disease drugs, now less used as an anti-myocardial ischemia. Its anti-platelet aggregation effect can be used in cardiac surgery or valve replacement, which can reduce the formation of thromboembolism.

Dipyridamole is a long-acting vasodilator. Its vasodilatingaction is selective for the coronary system; it is indicatedfor long-term therapy of chronic angina pectoris. Thedrug also inhibits adenosine deaminase in erythrocytesand interferes with the uptake of the vasodilator adenosineby erythrocytes. These actions potentiate the effect ofprostacyclin (PGI2), which acts as an inhibitor to plateletaggregation.
