Famciclovir is a diethyl acyl ester of 6-deoxy derivative of penciclovir. Its molecular formula is C14H19N5O4. It has good oral absorption and high bioavailability, so it replaces penciclovir. Famciclovir is a second-generation ring-opening nucleoside antiviral drug, mainly used for herpes virus infection, especially herpes zoster. Famciclovir is a penciclovir prodrug that is enzymatically converted to penciclovir in the intestinal wall and liver.

1.Famciclovir is indicated for the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles). Treatment of herpes simplex virus 2 (genital herpes) and herpes labialis (cold sores) in (non-)immunodeficient patients. Suppression of recurring episodes of herpes simplex virus 
2. Treatment of recurrent episodes of herpes simplex in HIV patients.
