Potassium iodide is an inorganic substance with a chemical formula of KI. It is a white translucent hexagonal crystal or white granular powder. It is odorless, salty and bitter in taste, slightly hygroscopic. It absorbs moisture and resolves free iodine to yellow when exposed to light. Brown-yellow. Not for internal use after discoloration.

Potassium iodide is used to prevent and treat endemic goiter. Because iodine is an important raw material for the synthesis of thyroxine, long-term iodine deficiency in food or increased iodine requirement of the body can cause insufficient synthesis of thyroid hormone and cause goiter.
