Artemisinin was originally developed in 1972 in China (Chines Institute of material medicine) from the plant Artemisia annua L , a sesquiterpene lactone(emperical formula C₁₅ H₂₂ O₅. Artemisinin is the active ingredient in qinghao, a Chinese herbal tea that have been used for 150 years to treat malariaand haemorrhoids.artemisinin source form Artemisia Annua which grows in the wild in China and now has been found to grow inother parts of the world too,though the species may vary a bit. Application&Function

According to pharmacological study, Artemisinin has a direct kill effect on plasmodium at erythrocytic stage, but invalid at organizational stage. Under electron microscopy observation, films structure is the main site of action to plasmodium yoelii. As its anti-malarial mechanism was regarded as interfering plasmodium pellicle's (mitochondria) function.
