Phenolphthalein, chemical name 3,3-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) -3H-isobenzofuranone, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C20H14O4. It is a white to slightly yellow crystalline powder, soluble in ethanol and alkaline solutions, slightly soluble in ether, very slightly soluble in chloroforme, insoluble in water, and characterized by colorless in acidic and neutral solutions, and purple red in alkaline solutions. It is often used as an acid-base indicator by people.
Phenolphthalein is a stimulant used for chronic constipation. It can directly stimulate the intestinal mucosa or activate nerve endings of intestinal smooth muscles, thereby increasing intestinal propulsion. Excessive laxity can lead to fluid and electrolyte disorders
