It inhibits nucleotide reductase and prevents the conversion of cytidylic acid to deoxycytidylic acid, thereby inhibiting DNA synthesis. It acts selectively on S-phase cells. It is rapidly absorbed orally, with peak blood concentrations in 1 hour and disappears in 6 hours. It crosses the erythrocyte membrane and the blood-brain barrier.
