Function
Cefotaxime is an antibiotic used to treat a number of bacterial infections. Specifically it is used to treat joint infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, meningitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, sepsis, gonorrhea, and cellulitis. It is given either by injection into a vein or muscle .
Application
The main clinical infection for susceptible strains of meningitis, pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, peritonitis, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, liver and gallbladder infection, surgical trauma, sepsis, and genital infections. As a treatment for gonorrhea has been first-line drugs.
Ceftriaxone injection is often used (in combination, but not direct, with macrolide and/or aminoglycoside antibiotics) for the treatment of community-acquired or mild to moderate health care-associated pneumonia. It is also a choice drug for treatment of bacterial meningitis. In pediatrics, it is commonly used in febrile infants between 4 and 8 weeks of age who are admitted to the hospital to exclude sepsis.
