Zidovudine, an organic compound with the chemical formula C10H13N5O4, is mainly used as an antiviral drug for the treatment of patients with AIDS or AIDS related syndromes and HIV infection.
On March 19, 1987, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved the drug for sale. Zidovudine is the first anti AIDS drug approved by the US FDA in the world. Because of its definite efficacy, it has become the most basic combination ingredient of "cocktail" therapy. Highly active against retroviruses, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), in vitro. In cells infected with the virus, it is phosphorylated by cell thymidine kinase to zidovudine triphosphate, which selectively inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase, leading to the termination of HIV chain synthesis and thus preventing HIV replication.

 

Application&Function

It is used for the treatment of AIDS acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) to delay the progress of the disease. When patients have comorbidities (such as pulmonary cysticercosis or other infections), symptomatic combination therapy with other drugs is necessary.
