Allantoin belongs to imidazole heterocyclic compounds and is a derivative of uric acid, which is a natural component of human skin. Uric acid, as an antioxidant, reacts with free radicals to produce uracil. In 1912, Mochelster extracted uracil from the underground stems of plants in the family Verbenaceae. Allantoin can promote cell tissue growth, metabolism, and soften keratin. When applied to ulcerated and suppurative skin, these properties are particularly evident, making it an effective active agent for accelerating wound healing and treating skin injuries.
Allantoin was once known as an anti stimulant, which can effectively reduce the stimulation of irritants; At the same time, it is also an antioxidant. Like some other water-soluble vitamins, its ability to collect free radicals is similar to that of vitamins, so it can enhance the antioxidant capacity of cells. Therefore, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified it as a Class I highly effective active ingredient skincare product, which is non-toxic, non irritating, and has no allergic reactions.
Application&Function
1. Moisturizing and repairing effects: Allantoin has excellent moisturizing effects, especially for cracked and rough skin, which can restore smoothness and moisturization. At the same time, it can enhance the water absorption capacity of the outermost layer of the skin and hair, improve the hydrophilicity of keratin protein molecules, and repair the damaged stratum corneum, restoring its natural water absorption capacity.
2. Moisturizing effect: Allantoin promotes the water absorption capacity of the outermost layer of the skin and hair, reduces the evaporation of skin moisture, and forms a lubricating film on the surface of the skin to block moisture, thus achieving the moisturizing effect of the skin.
3. The softening effect of keratin is due to its unique properties of dissolving keratin, which gives it the ability to soften keratin. While peeling off metabolic waste keratin, it also fills the intercellular spaces with moisture, making the skin reach a hydrated and radiant state.
4. Anti inflammatory and antioxidant effects: Due to its amphiphilic nature, allantoin can combine with various substances to form complex salts, which have functions such as light avoidance, sterilization, anti-corrosion, pain relief, and antioxidant. It is widely used as an additive in freckle creams, acne cleansers, shampoos, soaps, toothpaste, shaving cleansers, hair conditioners, astringents, anti sweat and deodorizing cleansers, etc.
