The complex of Bleomycin and iron intercalates into DNA, causing DNA single-strand and double-strand breaks. Does not cause RNA strand breaks. The first step of action is that the dithiazole ring of this product is inserted between the G-C base pairs of DNA, and at the same time the positive charge of the terminal tripeptide amino acid and the DNA phosphate group act to melt it. The second step of action is that the complex of this product and iron leads to the generation of superoxide or hydroxyl radicals, causing DNA strand breaks. Ineffective in oral administration, need to be injected intramuscularly or intravenously.

Application&Function

Bleomycin is a broad-spectrum antitumor drug. Bleomycin is effective for squamous cell carcinomas, including cancers of
the head and neck, skin, esophagus, lungs, cervix, penis, thyroid, and malignant lymphomas. Bleomycin also has a certain
effect on brain tumors, malignant melanoma, and fibrosarcoma.
