Benzocaine chemical formula is C9H11NO2, is an organic compound. It is a colorless rhomboid crystal, odorless and tasteless. Soluble in almond oil, olive oil, dilute acid, insoluble in water. It is clinically used for analgesia and relieving itching in wounds, ulcers, burns, chafed skin and hemorrhoids. Benzocaine hydrochloride is the hydrochloride form of local anesthetic benzocaine. Its pharmacological action is the same as that of benzocaine, but its anesthetic effect is weaker than that of procaine. Local absorption is slow and the effect is long-lasting. Because it is insoluble in water, it cannot be used as infiltration anesthesia, and it has analgesic and antipruritic effects. Benzocaine is also known as ethyl para-aminobenzoate , sinacecine.
Benzocaine is a topical analgesic (meaning it can be used on the body or in the mouth, but should not be swallowed) and is used in a variety of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines. Depending on the dosage and form, the active ingredient, benzocaine, can be used to relieve throat and mouth pain; relieve genital itching and burning; stop pain and itching from hemorrhoids; or relieve minor skin irritation, pain, and itching.
Benzocaine is the only active ingredient in oral treatments that can relieve sore throats or address mouth pain caused by cold sores, mouth sores, teething, and other problems. It can also be used in combination with other active ingredients in oral treatments to not only relieve sore mouth and throat, but also protect irritated areas, provide a soothing coating or relieve dryness.
