Oxcarbazepine is a new antiepileptic carbamazepine derivative, reportedly better tolerated than carbamazepine. It appears to be most effective in partial epilepsy with complex seizures.
Oxcarbazepine (10,11-dihydro-10-oxo-5H-dibenzo[b,f]aza-5-carboxamide) mainly exerts pharmacological effects through its metabolite monohydroxy derivative (MHD) . The mechanism of action of oxcarbazepine and MHD is believed to be mainly through blocking the voltage-sensitive sodium channel, thereby stabilizing the cell membrane of over-excited neurons, inhibiting the repetitive firing of neurons, and reducing the transmission of synaptic impulses. In addition, activation of calcium channels by increasing potassium conductivity and regulating high voltage also has an anticonvulsant effect.
