Penciclovir is a white crystalline solid chemical with a chemical formula of 9-[4-hydroxy-3-(hydroxymethyl)-butyl]-guanine, a molecular formula of C10H15N5O3 and a molecular weight of 253.25800. Dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide, slightly soluble in water, very slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in methanol, chloroform or ethyl acetate; slightly soluble in 0.1mol/L hydrochloric acid solution or 0.1mol/L sodium hydroxide solution, melting point 275~277ºC. Penciclovir is mainly used clinically for herpes simplex and genital herpes on the lips or on the face.

Application & Function

Penciclovir is a purine acyclic nucleoside analogue with potent antiviral activity. The compound has been used in Human.Herpesvirus 6 studies and its activity assessed through flow cytometry. Herpes simplex virus-1 studies indicate that Penciclovir induces apoptosis without causing much genotoxicity.
Penciclovir is a guanine analogue antiviral drug used for the treatment of various herpesvirus infections. It is a nucleoside analogue which exhibits low toxicity and good selectivity. Because penciclovir is absorbed poorly when given orally (by mouth) it is used more as a topical treatment, and is the active ingredient in the cold sore medications. Famciclovir is a prodrug of penciclovir with improved oral bioavailability.
