Theophylline is an alkaloid extracted from tea and coffee, belonging to the purine alkaloids. Purines are widely distributed in the plant kingdom and more in higher plants, especially in the tea family and the Rubiaceae family. Theophylline is an active ingredient in Camelliasinensis. Theophylline can now be prepared by synthesis. Theophylline monohydrate is monoclinic flat sheet crystal (water), commercially available white crystalline powder, 1g soluble in 120mL of water, 80mL of ethanol and 110mL of chloro form; Soluble in hot water, olenic acid or nitric acid; Slightly soluble in ether. The characteristic wavelength of UV absorption (molar absorbance) is 270 nm. Although theophylline exists in tea, its oral safety is small,, and there are no unsafe reports for external use.
Application&Function
Theophylline has the effects of strengthening the heart, diuresis, dilating coronary arteries, relaxing bronchial smooth muscles and exciting the central nervous system. Mainly used to treat bronchial asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, cardiac dyspnea.
