Tiamulin is a bacteriostatic antibiotic belonging to the pleuromutilin class, but it has a bactericidal effect on sensitive bacteria at very high concentrations. Like macrolide antibiotics, tiamulin also inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S subunit of the ribosome.
Tiamulin has good antibacterial activity against many gram-positive bacteria including most Staphylococcus and Streptococcus (except Group D Streptococcus), as well as against Mycoplasma and Treponema hyodysenteriae. Except for certain strains of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, some E. coli and Klebsiella, the antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria is very weak.
Tiamulin is mainly used to treat pig pneumonia caused by sensitive Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, treponemal dysentery, and chronic respiratory disease in chickens.
