Abiraterone, chemical name 17-(3-pyridyl) androstane-5, 16-diene-3-β-ol, molecular formula C24H31NO, is a CYP17 inhibitor, which is mainly used for the treatment of patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer who have previously received chemotherapy containing paclitaxel. Abiraterone is Androgen antagonists.
Abiraterone acetate is a steroidal antiandrogen, specifically an androgen synthesis inhibitor, used in combination with  in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (previously called hormone-resistant or hormone-refractory prostate cancer) - i.e., prostate cancer not responding to androgen deprivation or treatment with androgen receptor antagonists.

Application & Function

Abiraterone Acetate is an orally active acetate sester form of the steroidal compound abiraterone with antiandrogen activity.Abiraterone inhibits the enzymatic activity of steroid 17alpha-monooxygenase (17alpha-hydrolase/C17,20 lyase complex), a member of the cytochrome p450 family that catalyzes the 17alpha-hydroxylation of steroid intermediates involved in t synthesis. Administration of this agent may suppress production by both the testes and the adrenals to castrate-range levels.
