Neomycin sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. This product has a good antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus (methicillin-sensitive strains), Corynebacterium, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus and other Enterobacteriaceae bacteria, and has good antibacterial effects on various groups of Streptococcus and pneumonia. The activity of cocci and Enterococcus is poor. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and anaerobic bacteria are resistant to this product. Bacteria have partial or complete cross-resistance to streptomycin, neomycin, kanamycin and gentamicin. Systemic neomycin has significant nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity, so it is limited to oral or topical application.

Application&Function

Pharmacokinetics: Neomycin is seldom absorbed by oral administration (about 3%), but a relatively large amount can be absorbed by long-term oral administration. When the intestinal mucosa has ulcer or inflammation, it can still absorb a considerable amount, especially when the renal function declines. The blood drug concentration can be significantly increased . After oral administration, most of them are excreted with feces unchanged.
Indications: Oral can be used for: 1. Intestinal infection. 2. It can also be used as an adjuvant treatment for bowel preparation before colon surgery or when hepatic coma. Neomycin is not suitable for the treatment of systemic infections.
Usage and dosage: 1. Orally, 0.25~0.5g (calculated as neomycin) for adults, 4 times a day. Adjuvant treatment of hepatic encephalopathy, 0.5~1g each time, once every 6 hours, the course of treatment is 5~6 days. Preparation before colon surgery, 0.5g per hour, 4 times in a row, followed by 0.5g every 4 hours for a total of 24 hours. 2. Children take 25-50mg/kg a day according to their body weight, divided into 4 doses.
Adverse reactions: 1. It can cause loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea, etc., but long-term application (over 10 weeks) does not affect the synthesis of vitamin K. 2. Hearing loss, tinnitus or fullness of the ears are rarely found; dizziness or unstable walking; significant reduction in urine output or frequency of urination or extreme thirst. 3. Occasionally, it can cause intestinal mucosal atrophy and lead to malabsorption syndrome and fatty diarrhea, and even pseudomembranous enteritis.
Contraindications: Patients who are allergic to neomycin or other aminoglycoside antibiotics should not use this product.
