Chloramphenicol, is a broad spectrum antibiotic produced by Streptomyces chloramphenicol that has the effect of inhibiting bacterial growth.  Natural chloramphenicol is levomycin, is white or yellowish needle or flake crystal, odorless, bitter taste, slightly soluble in water, ether, easily soluble in alcohol, insoluble in benzene.  In neutral or weak acid aqueous solution is more stable, easy to fail in alkali.

Application & Function

1.   Chloramphenicol is used to treat a wide range of infections caused by bacteria, such as typhoid fever, acute respiratory infections, and bacterial meningitis.
2.   Chloramphenicol is also used as an alternative to treat eye infections caused by susceptible organisms, such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, and blepharitis.
3.   It is used to treat severe infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Haemophilus influenzae.
4.   It is also used to treat infections caused by Clostridium species, such as tetanus and botulism.
5.   Chloramphenicol is also used to treat certain fungal infections, such as Candida albicans.
6.   It is used to treat some forms of leukaemia in adults and children.
