Mifepristone, also known as RU-486, is a medication typically used with misoprostol to bring about anabortion. This combination is more than 95% effective during the first 50 days of pregnancy. It is also effective in the second trimester of pregnancy. Two weeks after use effectiveness should be verified. It is taken by mouth.This combination is 97% effective during the first 63 days of pregnancy. It is also effective in the second trimester of pregnancy.It is taken by mouth.Mifepristone at low doses has been used for emergency contraception.  It may also be used together with misoprostol for early pregnancy loss.Mifepristone has also been used to treat symptomatic leiomyoma (uterine fibroids) and endometriosis.

Application & Function

A new type of anti-progesterone, and has anti-glucocorticoid activity, but no progesterone, estrogen, androgen and anti-estrogenic activity.   The affinity to progesterone receptors is 5 times stronger than that of progesterone.   Used for anti-early pregnancy, urging menstruation to stop pregnancy, and inducing labor within dead fetus.
