Roxithromycin is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic. It is used to treat respiratory, urinary and soft tissue infections. Roxithromycin is derived from erythromycin and contains the same 14-membered lactone ring. However, the N-fluorene side chain is attached to the lactone ring. It is currently undergoing clinical trials for the treatment of male pattern hair loss. Roxithromycin is available under several trade names such as Roxl-150, Roxo, Surlid, Rulide, Biaxsig, Roxar, Roximycin, Roxomycin, Tirabicin and Coroxin. Roxithromycin has also been tested and has antimalarial activity.
