Function of Mupirocin
1. Mupirocin is a topical antibiotics. Stops the synthesis of all intracellular isoleucine-containing proteins by reversibly binding to isoleucine-transfer RNA synthase and thus preventing isoleucine participation. Used for acute primary bacterial skin infections, such as folliculitis and impetigo.
2. Mupirocin, is a major component of the pseudomonic acid, an antibiotic complex produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens NCIB 10586. Topical antibacterial.
3. Pseudomonic acid is a potent antibiotic produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens, reported by Fuller et al. in 1971. Pseudomonic acid has broad spectrum activity against Gram positive bacteria and was approved for topical human use in 1985. Pseudomonic acid acts as a potent and selective inhibitor of isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase.
4. Mupirocin is an antibiotic inhibitor of isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase.
Application of Mupirocin
Mupirocin Calcium is used to treat infected cuts or wounds. It is an antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria.
Mupirocin is used as a topical treatment for bacterial skin infections, for example, furuncle, impetigo, open wounds, etc. It is also useful in the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is a significant cause of death in hospitalized patients having received systemic antibiotic therapy. It is suggested, however, that mupirocin cannot be used for extended periods of time, or indiscriminately, as resistance does develop, and could, if it becomes widespread, destroy mupirocin's value as a treatment for MRSA. It may also result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms.
